Achieving & Maintaining Mental Vitality As We Age Mental vitality is essential to quality of life and survival in old age. With normal aging, mental changes such as slowed speed of processing information are common, but there is a lot of individual variability and cognitive decline is clearly not inevitable. There is substantial evidence that various lifestyle factors and medical conditions effect our mental capacities. Most of these factors are modifiable or manageable, and some are protective. There are a number of strategies to promote cognitive vitality with aging. Early recognition of a decline in mental capacity allows for the opportunity to change the outcome for individuals at risk. There are tests and diagnostic techniques designed to pick up some correctable conditions. It is extremely important for family or friends that may be the first to notice cognitive changes to be aware of the benefits of early referral to their health care provider. The most modifiable means of achieving and maintaining mental vitality involves lifestyle management. You can actually build a "mental reserve" by remaining intellectually and socially active. Making a commitment to lifelong learning and maintaining active social networks are both strongly associated with healthy mental capacities as we age. Activities like crossword puzzles, reading and volunteering at your church or schools can provide the mental exercise needed to maintain your mental vitality. Social isolation is one of the foes of our mental health and should be minimize. The habit of regularly exercising is highly associated with the achievement of a healthy mental stamina. The exercise need not be strenuous but consistent and at least 3 times each week for at least 20 minutes. Walking, swimming and biking are excellent but exercise with a purpose is also very valuable like, gardening and collecting cans and liter off the streets of your neighborhood. Exercise also minimizes the effects of stress. The other important lifestyle modifiable condition involves our diet. We must earnestly avoid the temptation to over eat! Gluttony has been the demise of many great minds. Drinking plenty of water and making the decision to eat at least one piece of raw vegetable or fruit with each meal can make a tremendous difference in our mental alertness. The use of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs and excessive prescription medications are associated with less mental clarity and capacity during the aging process. If you diligently practice the principles for managing your mental capacity as you age and yet neglect your spiritual health you will likely gain a vast clarity of your unfulfilled self.
